Basic Skin Care Tips Remain the Same for Both Women & Men

​Beauty care was a term associated with the female population only during the previous decades. But of late, we see more unisex beauty salons or salons specially designated for men! Earlier, men generally followed basic skin or hair care which is now gradually changing over with more men in pursuit of healthier skin. They are investing time in taking care of the body’s largest organ-skin. While there might be differences between a man’s and a woman’s skin (a man’s skin is thicker than a woman’s), the basic elements of a good skin care plan are similar.

Whatever might be your skin type −sensitive, normal, dry, oily or combination skin −eating nutritious foods that enable us to maintain skin health is primarily important along with other healthy skin care routines.

1. Drinking plenty of water keeps your skin in shape, keeps it moist, enables cells to absorb nutrient and flush away toxins, regulates blood flow and makes it glow. Try to drink at least 8 glasses of water in a day. The fruits, vegetables, juice and milk you consume can also be counted towards adding water content to your body.
2. Selenium protects your skin from cells that trigger free radicals (these work towards skin aging, wrinkles, dry skin and tissue damage) and also against skin cancer. Selenium is most abundantly found in Brazil nuts and in other foods like shrimp, lamb, fish, cod, halibut, tuna, button mushrooms and salmon. Whole-wheat pasta, sardines, crab, oysters, cooked beef and light turkey are also other sources of selenium.
3. Antioxidants fight against free radicals that can cause skin damage. Colorful fruits and veggies such as berries, tomatoes, apricots, beets, squash, spinach, sweet potatoes, tangerines, peppers and beans are excellent sources of antioxidants. 4. Vitamin A helps to avoid dry, flaky skin which anybody hates to have. Bite on crunchy carrots, oranges, cantaloupe, leafy greens, eggs and low-fat dairy foods to have a smooth skin.
5. Sunlight can have a devastating effect on your skin sometimes.  Vitamin C helps to protect your skin from harmful radiations and also helps to undo sun damage to collagen and elastin, proteins that firm up your skin.
6. Vitamin E protects skin against oxidative cell damage and enables healthy skin growth. Get your share of nuts, seeds, vegetable oils, olives, spinach, asparagus and avocados to supply your body with this nutrient.
7. Healthy fats are mandatory to moisturize your skin and keep it away from blemishes. Foods that contain healthy fats include flaxseeds, walnuts, olive and canola oil and cold-water fish like salmon, sardines and mackerel.
8. Finally, eat at least five portions of rainbow-colored vegetables and fruits for normal skin cell development and healthy skin tone. Beta-carotene found in pumpkin and carrots, and lutein present in kale, papaya and spinach are potent antioxidants that help to protect against the damage of free radicals caused by smoking, pollution and sunlight.

Don’t expect a miracle change in skin tone once your start incorporating these changes in your diet. It takes a while for the new skin to grow and for your dietary modifications to show some effect as well. Be patient and trust your nutrients to have a clean and smooth skin.
