Exercise keeps one and all healthy-the young, the aged, the disabled, the stressed and the diseased. A new study has found that older women who get more moderate to vigorous physical activity are less likely to die prematurely than their counterparts who don’t exercise much.
The study involved more than 17,000 women with an average age of 72. These women were asked to wear accelerometers every day for a week and the participants were followed for more than two years. During this period 207 women died. Women who involved themselves in brisk physical activity daily for 70 minutes were up to 70% less likely to die comparatively. Doing more low-intensity exercise didn’t appear to procrastinate the risk of death in any way. Read more on the recommended activity levels and duration of exercise for any normal individual at www.firsteatright.com. Although, studies already exist portraying the effect of exercise on health, activity trackers such as accelerometers are more reliable ways to examine the connection between longevity and exercise habits as they give a clear picture of the actual time dedicated by people for exercise, their actual effort and their number of hours of sedentary lifestyle. Also, while most studies see a 20 to 30 percent reduction in the risk of death, this study showed a 60-70% risk reduction. One disadvantage of the study is that researchers did not follow these women for many years and also relied on the women themselves to report any health problems. What Experts Recommend Nutritionists/dietitians recommend individuals to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity on at least five days a week. If you feel brisk walk to be monotonous or can’t afford to do it every single day, choose anything that interests you-it might be swimming, bicycling, rowing, seated steppers or arm cycling. Your goal should be to get as much exercise as you can to reap the life-sustaining benefits. So, ladies put on your sneakers and exercise vigorously every day to prolong your life.
