Juvenile diabetes is bad. Staying away from sugary foods, confectionery and chocolates right from a young age is disappointing. Even more disappointing is the news that young diabetics are at a seven-time greater risk of dying from sudden cardiac arrest than their peers who don’t have diabetes.
This study calls for the need of early and ongoing heart monitoring in children and young adults with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. This is because, children and young adults who have died from sudden cardiac death often experienced symptoms of chest pains or fainting beforehand.
Diabetes is a disease where blood sugar levels are extremely high and can cause other health problems such as damage to blood vessels and nerves, even those that control the heart and blood vessels. While Type 1 diabetes occurs mostly in children and young adults, Type 2 diabetes can occur in any individual, mostly adults. Sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy food habits and obesity are the main causes for this type of diabetes.
Study Proving Increased Risk of Diabetes
Sudden cardiac death is the result of electrical malfunction in the heart causing it to beat irregularly. This happens without any warning abruptly. Once the heart’s pumping action is disrupted and the blood can’t reach the brain, lungs or other organs, the person becomes unconscious and has no pulse. If this is not immediately attended to, death can result within a few minutes. This calls for knowledge on CPR and insists on training given for the same. Not even 50% of the cardiac arrests happening outside hospital premises receive bystander CPR before formal medical help arrives. The rate of survival is greater for such people who receive CPR before reaching the hospital for treatment. Read more on CPR at www.firsteatright.com.
A basic life skill, CPR knowledge is no rocket science, but it is also not something that can be learnt by calling up your friend in the middle of a cardiac arrest.
