People with dogs had a 23% reduced risk of death from cardiac diseases like heart failure, stroke or heart attack and were 20% less likely to die than their dog-less companions.
Factors Determining the Advantage Quotient
The advantage depends on the number of dogs you own too! Single-dog owners are best benefited having a 33% reduced risk of death compared to their non-dog-owning friends. Single member households view dogs as their best mates and are viewed as an indispensable member of the family.
The extent of protection given depended on the breed of the dog too! Hunting-breed dogs were believed to offer maximum protection to their owners against cardiovascular diseases and death. Individuals owning a pointer dog were 40% less likely to die and people with retrievers were 26% less likely.
