Keep Pets Cozy & Comfy During Winter

1/7/2019

Avoid frostbites for pets by covering their feet in booties and body with sweater
Oh Goodness! He Looks Smart in the Sweater// Dogs Don’t Shiver When they Have their Sweater
Dogs and cats too suffer from hypothermia Don't Leave Pets inside the Car during Winter
It’s highly unlikely that we venture out in the cold weather without a valid reason and when we do, we are covered from head to toe protecting ourselves against the chill air outside. Jogging, walking or even going to the gym becomes a painful affair and it’s not uncommon that some individuals skip workout during the entire winter season sometimes. Physical activity needs no vacation and there are ways to continue the routine lifestyle irrespective of the weather conditions outside by being extra protective. Understand what ‘extra protective’ means and prepare yourself for a solid exercise session during winter with the help of www.firsteatright.com. How about taking the pet for a walk in the freezing weather?

Presence of Fur is not a Surety Against Chills
Your adorable pet might be covered with a thick coat of fur and seems to remain unbothered about the weather as long as he/she stays inside your cozy little home. Once you take the pet for a stroll or walk, especially during early morning or late-night hours, he/she would be pretty grateful if you take a few precautionary steps to fend off winter chills from disturbing the pet’s health and comfort. After all, they are voiceless souls who can only express their happiness and needs through gestures and sounds.

Understand that pets too can get frostbite and hypothermia just like humans. It is the duty of every pet owner to protect his/her adorable creature from any of these. Its actually easier that thought to protect your dog from the cold outside as most measures are similar to the ones we do for our own protection:

  • It’s advisable to get/stitch a jacket/sweater for your dog
  • After returning from a walk its essential to check your pet’s paws for any signs of redness or cracks
  • You can apply any paw-protection gel/cream while taking your pet outside. Even more recommended is to make them wear boots
  • It might be your pet’s nature to stay outdoors mostly when you have got a huge lawn and open area to roam around. But during cold weather please bring your dogs and cats inside for safety reasons
  • It is never recommended to leave your pet inside the car, summer or winter. Rise in temperature can cause overheating in pets and cooling down of cars during winter also poses a risk to the pet when left indoors
  • During cold winter months please check under your cars before starting the engine for a reluctant pussy that might be curled up anywhere near the wheels or right under the vehicle. These cats seek recluse near the warm engines of your car to beat the cold weather from affecting them
  • Look for symptoms of hypothermia (such as confusion, slowed movement and anxiousness) or frostbite (blister or skin discoloration). If you notice one, immediately take the pet to a veterinarian.
  • If your pet has the habit of sleeping near a window/door or on the floor, ensure to bring your pet further inside away from the chilling breeze. Get a pet bed or make a comfortable one with the blankets and rugs that you have

It is also advisable to walk your pet to a shorter duration than normal to avoid chills/cold during winter. Never get a hair cut done for your pet during winter months. Save them for warm summer months. Pets usually burn more calories during winter and might feel hungrier. It is recommended to offer than larger than normal portions to keep their tummies full and their heart content.

Your pets are just like you. They don’t relish the winter chills and wait for it to get over as soon as possible. But it is our responsibility to take care of them until the warm sunshine strikes.
